In the USA, United Utilities' shares are also available in the form of American depositary shares (ADS), evidenced by American depositary receipts (ADR), which trade over the counter (OTC). An ADR is a security which has been created to permit US investors to hold shares in non-US companies and trade them on the stock exchanges in the US.
Trading in ADRs, as opposed to ordinary shares, permits US residents to trade in US dollars in the US securities markets with US securities dealers, in the same way as they trade any US securities. Although ADRs are US dollar denominated securities and pay dividends in US dollars, they do not eliminate the currency risk associated with an investment in a non-US company.
