Rivington

Welcome to Rivington - The home of great water.....

Rivington is home to some of the most beautiful countryside in the North West.  It's also the home of some of the best water, and we hope you'll help us to keep it that way. These moors and valleys collect the rainwater that ends up in taps from Wigan to Liverpool.

It might look like one big lake full of water, but Rivington is actually made up of a chain of eight different reservoirs built between 1850 and 1857. They all flow down the valleys, by gravity, into the lowest and biggest reservoir Lower Rivington.

Upper Roddlesworth, Lower Roddlesworth, and Rake Brook reservoirs are near Brinscall, Chorley. These three feed into a channel called The Goit, which was originally an open stream but was covered over in the early 1900s to protect it from local industry and keep it clean.  The Goit carries this water into Anglezarke reservoir which, along with Yarrow and High Bullough reservoirs, feeds through into Upper and Lower Rivington.

Together all 8 reservoirs can hold a whopping 18,000 million litres of water - that's enough to give every home in the world a bucketful!

Walking and riding trails in and around the area reveal many interesting features including two cruck barns, the ruined replica of Liverpool Castle, Leverhulme's Terraced Gardens and Rivington Pike. (Map will be availble soon)

There are lots of other outdoor activities to do at Rivington besides walking and cycling. The Anderton Centre, on the shores of Lower Rivington reservoir, welcomes groups of young people for canoeing, wind-surfing, orienteering, climbing and lots more.

And for those with a head for heights there's Go Ape, near the Great House Barn car park.
