Wirral water trunk mains cleaning
Even cleaner water on tap for the Wirral
We're constantly working to improve the supply and quality of your
water so you continue to receive clean, fresh water to use for all your
everyday activities. But age can catch up with everything, including
our pipes.
We're investing £21 million in a programme of work to clean a number
of our major water mains throughout the whole of the Wirral. Some of
the pipes in the area are over 90 years old and over time natural
mineral deposits have built up inside. These deposits are not harmful to
health, although they can cause the water to become discoloured. You
may have seen us, we've been busy cleaning and refurbishing our
pipes and by 2015 when the work is expected to be completed, we'll have
covered around 40 kilometres of water main, helping to improve the
water supply for 190,000 Wirral households.
What will we be doing?
We'll be using a variety of techniques to clean and refurbish the
mains. The type of method we use will depend on the condition of the
existing pipe and may involve high pressure water jetting or where the
existing pipes are in poorer condition, new plastic pipe will be
inserted within the original cast iron shells to provide a secure new
lining, known as 'sliplining'. There are a few areas of the schemes
where it will be necessary to dig open larger sections of the road.
This will allow us to lay new water mains where the other cleaning
methods are deemed unsuitable, or to maintain water supplies while we
work on other stretches of water main.
It's important to us that while we have to carry out this work, we do
this without getting in your way too much. We may need to turn your
water supply off or divert traffic for short periods, but if we need to
do this in your area we'll let you know in advance. We'll keep you
updated as our work progresses and would like to thank you for your
co-operation during our work to provide even cleaner water on tap for
the Wirral.
Crosshill to Birkenhead
Project Overview: The project will take place in stages as illustrated on the overview map.
Phase 1 Wallasey/Liscard area
How this may affect you
Stages 1a, 2 and 4 are complete. Work is ongoing on stage 1b (Mill
Lane, Breck Road and Poulton Bridge Road) which is expected to be
completed in early June 2012. We're continuing on stage 3 around Mount
Road, Mount Pleasant Road and Seaview Road. The work will progress along
Seaview Road and past Asda over the next few weeks. We expect this work
to be completed in mid June. To complete this work safely we will need
to put in place some traffic management which may involve temporary
lane closures, traffic lights or restricted parking.
Phase 2 Thingwall, Prenton, Noctorum, Clughton and Birkenhead areas
Project Overview: Some of our largest water
pipelines carrying water from Crosshill Reservoir in Barnston through to
Wallasey, Liscard, New Brighton and Birkenhead will be refurbished by
inserting a new plastic pipe into the existing water main. We know that
roadworks are a pain and by digging holes at specific points, normally a
few hundred metres apart, this will allow us to insert the new pipe and
reduce the disruption to the local community.
How this may affect you
This phase of work is planned to start in autumn 2013. We'll keep you updated as our plans progress.
Crosshill to Wallasey
We've already completed three phases of work in this area and are due to start on phase four in early summer 2012.
How this may affect you
Phase 4 will take place in four stages and is expected to take over a
year to complete. We'll start work in Wallasey and progress towards
Thingwall. We'll need to carry out some initial work on Leasowe Road
which is expected to take three months to complete. We'll also start
our main work in Wallasey on Gorsehill Road and move along in sections
along Stoneby Drive, Grove Road, Wallasey Village, back onto Leasowe
Road, Reeds Lane, Hoylake Road, Upton Road, Moreton Road, Arrowe Park
Road and Barnston Road.
Grange
Project Overview: We've laid some new water mains in
Moreton, Meols, Hoylake, Caldy and Thurstaston. This will help us to
maintain water supplies while we complete some cleaning work at one of
our reservoirs on the Wirral.
How this may affect you
We have one section of work to complete at the junction of Barnston
Road with Milner Road. This work is expected to be carried out late
summer 2012 and will take one week to complete.
