We're doing all can to prevent leaks, but if you see one in the road or footpath, please report it. As soon as we know about a leak we can sort it!
Leaks in the street or road
After the freezing weather the number of leaks and bursts can increase, particularly when temperatures rise.
Underground pipes are protected from the frost by their depth, but when the surrounding ground thaws out this can cause the ground to move, putting pressure on pipe joints and causing bursts.
If you spot a leak outside on the road or footpath, please report it, using the online form or call us on 0800 330033.
What causes pipes to leak?
Leaks happen for lots of different reasons, it could be that the underground pipe's old or it's been damaged - sometimes arctic weather can freeze and crack the pipe; tree roots can get a hold, or building work being done near to the pipe can cause problems.
Why doesn't United Utilities know where all the leaks are?
Underground pipes can leak and burst anywhere and even though we're doing all we can to prevent leaks and get them fixed quickly, they can be difficult to find, so we really appreciate your extra help.
When is a leak not a leak?
It's usually simple to identify a leak, it's often clear water which can be trickling or gushing from the ground.
Water lying over a drain after it's been pouring down, probably isn't a leak, if you're not sure, let us know about it.
How long does it take to fix a leak?
We want to fix leaks as quickly as possible. Sometimes, we have to prioritise emergency repairs which may affect the water supply into customer's homes. We aim to fix leaks within seven to ten days of it being reported.
Leaks in your home
If the leak is in your home, outside your home but within your property boundary or in another location within your property this will be the responsibility of the homeowner.
