Dove Stone Reservoir
Dove Stone is situated in the Peak District National Park, east of Oldham and Ashton-under-Lyne on Saddleworth Moor. To the north is Diggle and Uppermill, and the A635 runs to the west of the reservoirs.
In Dove Stone valley there are four reservoirs. Yeoman Hey is the oldest reservoir, constructed in 1880. All the reservoirs supply water to the outskirts of Manchester.
Chew, the most southerly, was, at the time of its construction in 1914, the highest reservoir in the British Isles - 1600ft above sea level. A tramway was constructed to transport material to the site. Some of the original tramway bed is still visible.
Dove Stone valley is surrounded by bleak moorland and high outcrops of rock giving it a magnificent panoramic view of the southern Pennines.
Most of the older woodland is a variety of spruce and pine, but more recently several broad leaf species have been included in the plantations to help provide a habitat for a larger range of wildlife.
