Private pumping stations
If you have a private pumping station, we’ll look after it
We’re taking responsibility for private pumping stations – so you don’t have to.
You might have a private pumping station on your land or near your premises. It acts as a sewage collection system that works alongside gravity to get sewage from your premises to a treatment works; and where there’s a pumping station serving your property, there’ll also be a power supply nearby - in a kiosk or another kind of structure.
If a private pumping station is helping to move your sewage, you may well be solely responsible (or jointly responsible, where it serves several properties) for its upkeep - but to make life easier for our customers, we’ll soon be taking responsibility for all private pumping stations that:
- Serve a single property, and are outside the property boundary or
- Serve two or more properties
Transfers of ownership will happen by the 1st October 2016 (though we may take ownership of some stations before this date) and we’re using the interim period to locate and survey the private pumping stations in our area. There are around 2,100, so we’ve got a lot of work to do!
